New York Proposes Legislation to Safeguard Reproductive Health Data

In response to growing concerns over the misuse of reproductive health data, New York State is considering legislation aimed at enhancing privacy protections. The proposed bill (S.929/A.2141) seeks to require explicit user consent for the collection and sharing of reproductive health information, mandate regular data deletion, and protect individuals from prosecution in states with restrictive abortion laws. This initiative follows cases where private digital communications, such as Facebook messages, were used in legal actions against individuals seeking reproductive health services. Advocates emphasize the urgency of this legislation to prevent the criminalization of personal health decisions and to ensure that individuals can seek care without fear of data exploitation.​
