FTC Finalizes Updates to Children’s Privacy Protection Rules

UK Version of GDPR

The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) has finalized a series of updates to the Children’s Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA), introducing stricter rules for businesses that collect data from children under the age of 13.

The new changes include:
Parental consent is now mandatory before third-party advertisers can collect data from children.
Data minimization principles must be followed, meaning companies can only collect information strictly necessary for the service.
Stronger accountability requirements for online platforms, ensuring they proactively enforce child data protection measures.

These changes aim to enhance protections for children’s online activities and prevent unauthorized data collection and monetization practices targeting young users. Companies that fail to comply could face significant fines and legal consequences.
